Man win's $315 million jackpot -largest in history! HURRICANE, West Virginia (CNN) -- A 55-year-old West Virginia grandfather has been verified as the sole winner of the national Powerball lottery worth $314.9 million, a lottery official said Thursday. The man, said to own his own construction company, is expected to be named the largest single-ticket winner in lottery history. The verification sets "a world record for a single-ticket winner," Nancy Bulla, a state lottery spokeswoman told CNN. Besides being a single-ticket winner, the man did not buy the ticket for a group, and therefore, won't be splitting the proceeds, Bulla said. The potential winner has opted for a cash payout of $170 million, officials said. State lottery officials said they expected to announce the winner Thursday during a 3 p.m. EST news conference in Charleston, West Virginia. The winning numbers for the Christmas drawing were 53, 14, 5, 16 and 29, with a Powerball number of 7. The payout for a winner who decides to take a lump-sum payment is about $112.5 million after taxes. Larry Trogdon, owner of the C&L Superserve in Hurricane, West Virginia, told CNN his store sold the winning ticket. Hurricane is about 22 miles west of Charleston, on I-64. The convenience store will receive $100,000, he said. Trogdon said he did not know who won the jackpot but believed most of his customers of locals. The fact that one his customers won, said Trogdon, "is great for them." The jackpot had been building since before Halloween, according to the Multi-State Lottery Association, which runs Powerball. After Saturday's drawing failed to produce a winning number, people lined up in stores across the Powerball states, plus the District of Columbia and the U.S. Virgin Islands, where the game is played. The lines often stretched outside store doors and even around corners. Multimillionaire hopefuls plunked down large sums of cash – sometimes hundreds of dollars -- in pursuit of the jackpot. But even buying multiple tickets can do little to increase the odds of winning, which lottery officials estimated at 1 in 120 million. Winners can choose between payments spread out over 29 years or a single cash payout. |
